ICEJ hosts emergency Jerusalem Summit on Israel and the Church
High-level gathering takes on rising antisemitism, Replacement theology, Nicene Creed
In June, the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem hosted the Jerusalem Summit, an emergency gathering to encourage and equip Christian leaders to stand up to the rampant wave of antisemitism spreading worldwide since the October 7 terror invasion of Israel by Hamas three years ago.
The high-level roster of theologians and Bible scholars speaking at the Summit also examined the new forms of Replacement theology gaining traction even in Evangelical circles, such as the New Pauline Perspective.
Finally, the Summit addressed the failure of the Council of Nicaea held 1700 years ago to acknowledge the central role of Israel in the birth of the Church and the Jewishness of Jesus when compiling the Nicene Creed. This examination of Nicaea came after the ICEJ led a year-long period of prayer and study on Nicaea and its impact on Church history.
Over 200 Christian theologians, pastors and ministry leaders from more than 30 nations attended the Jerusalem Summit in Israel, while more than 3,500 joined us online.
“We are living in a decisive moment for the Church, as antisemitism is surging at an alarming rate worldwide following the October 7 terror invasion, and too many Christian leaders are responding with silence,” ICEJ President Dr. Jürgen Bühler told the assembled delegates. “At the same time, Israel is increasingly delegitimised – not only politically, but also in theological discourse even within Evangelical circles. For this reason, we have convened the Jerusalem Summit to help educate Christian leaders on how to counter modern antisemitism, to restore biblical clarity on Israel, and to strengthen the Church’s witness in a time of moral confusion.”
The presentations made at the Jerusalem Summit will be published in a book, and also posted online on the ICEJ’s channel on YouTube and other social media platforms.
On the final day of the Jerusalem Summit, the ICEJ released the “Jerusalem Affirmation of the Nicene Faith”, a contemporary statement of Christian belief and commitment developed by respected theologians and church leaders under the auspices of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Affirmation upholds the Nicene Creed as a unifying declaration of Christian faith centered on the divinity of Jesus, while also addressing the Council of Nicaea’s key omissions concerning the humanity of Jesus as a Jew, which were essential to establishing his credentials as the promised Messiah. The Affirmation also aims to restore the Church’s appreciation for the uniquely central role of Israel, the Patriarchs and the Hebrew Scriptures in birthing and nourishing the Christian faith from its inception.
